School Gate's Secret Weapon

“It’s Tuesday, Jane’s waiting by the school gate for her son to emerge. For the last three months, Jack has been going weekly, straight after school, to his maths tutor. In his short time, his performance in class tests has surged. Better still, he’s revelling in the sheer joy of getting it right.

She wonders if she should tell the school. She asks herself too if she should mention it to her best friend, whose daughter is attending the same secondary school as Jack. Jane does neither. As so many families, her son and his tutor remain a family secret.

When Sophie D., of Educated Tutors / Educated Households, first encountered this stealth approach to tutoring it puzzled her. Since then she’s come to accept that tutoring is a minefield of conflicting emotions and guilt. She shrugs in that typically Parisian way that betrays her origins: “Now I only worry how to fix the problem. For me it’s to match the best, most sympathetic tutor, with each child I take on. Voilà.”

When Sophie arrived in London 11 years ago to teach French, she soon attracted a roster of parents competing to get their youngsters into top of the leagues tables schools and into top flight universities.

When her delighted clients began ringing back to ask for another Sophie to tutor English, science, or maths, she realised the way forward was an agency supplying inspirational tutors, who could turn learning into the same joyous experience she’s herself come to expect.

As a result, Sophie has an investment banker with a passion for biology, a medical doctor teaching science, an actor extolling the joys of English, and even an economist and a museum curator among her roster of tutors (not to mention a raft of moonlighting teachers). “What they all have in common is a love of their subject and the ability to ‘light a fire’ in their students. Once youngsters are hungry to learn, the rest is easy”.

As for the best age to be tutored, Sophie says that the triggers are the big set-piece exams: Common Entrance, GCSE, A levels. For her the longer the lead time, the lighter the load; and thus the less pressure on the child (and parents).
